Quelle est votre « origin story » en tant que dessinateur ?
Je dessine depuis que j’ai l’âge de tenir un crayon et dessiner des comics est quelque chose que j’ai toujours voulu faire mais je ne pensais pas que c’était quelque chose qui était à ma portée quand j’étais plus jeune. Je n’ai pas fait d’études artistiques et je n’ai pas vraiment fait d’efforts concertés pour me lancer dans la bande dessinée avant la trentaine. J’ai eu beaucoup de chance d’être encadré et guidé par des gens comme Brian Stelfreeze et Sanford Greene.
Avez-vous lu des comics quand vous étiez jeune ? Lesquelles ?
Enfant, je voulais tout ce qui avait Superman en couverture. J’étais un fan de WORLD’S FINEST, Justice League mais ce n’est que lorsque les New Teen Titans sont apparus que je suis devenu un lecteur de comics de singles mensuels.
Quels sont les artistes qui ont influencé votre travail ?
Je ne sais pas si je me suis inspiré d’une source en particulier, mais Curt Swan, George Perez, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Neal Adams et John Byrne ont tous été mes artistes favoris à mes débuts.
Lorsque vous dessinez une page, sur quoi vous concentrez-vous ?
Pour moi, tout commence par le story-telling, donc quoi que raconte l’histoire, c’est ce que je cherche à atteindre de la meilleure façon possible. Le jeu et le langage corporel sont si importants à cette fin que je passe beaucoup de temps à essayer de faire les choses correctement.
Vous travaillez sur Bang ! avec Matt Kindt. Comment en êtes-vous venu à travailler sur ce projet ?
L’éditeur Daniel Chabon est quelqu’un avec qui j’ai travaillé plusieurs fois maintenant et après que Matt Kindt ait pitché le comic, Daniel a pensé que je serais un bon candidat et m’a contacté.
Bang ! est un comic d’espionnage. Comment avez-vous travaillé avec les nombreuses références du genre ? Vous inspirez-vous d’œuvres existantes ?
Le comic puise à plusieurs sources différentes mais le fil conducteur est ce genre d’archétypes issus de la littérature, du cinéma et de la télévision. De plus, Matt et moi sommes tous deux des enfants des années 80, donc il y a une bonne dose de tout cela mélangée pour faire bonne mesure.
Mike Mignola, Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt : vous avez travaillé avec les meilleurs auteurs de comics indépendants. Aimez-vous surtout les comics indépendants qui permettent une certaine liberté ou est-ce que c’est en fonction des opportunités qui se sont présentées ?
Vous avez oublié Mark Millar, Ta-Nahesi Coates et Matt Wagner 🙂 J’aime les bonnes histoires et je ne suis pas très pointilleux sur le lieu où elles se déroulent et j’ai eu beaucoup de chance avec les auteurs avec lesquels j’ai pu collaborer.
Vous avez aussi travaillé sur la série Black Panther qui a une forte connotation politique. Comment concevez-vous l’équilibre entre le divertissement et le message dans les comics ?
Nous investissons beaucoup de temps et d’efforts dans la réalisation de ces comics. Notre objectif principal est de divertir, mais si vous pouvez le faire tout en transmettant un message qui résonne avec les gens, vous avez bien fait votre travail.
Souhaiteriez-vous travailler sur un personnage Marvel ou de DC Comics dans une série ongoing en tant que dessinateur principal ? Lequel ?
J’ai une longue liste de personnages Marvel et DC Comics avec lesquels j’aimerais passer un peu de temps, mais si je devais faire une série ongoing, je préfèrerais que ce soit un creator owned dans lequel je puisse m’investir pleinement.
Lisez-vous des comics ? Lesquelles ?
J’en lis et j’essaie de rester à jour, mais il y a tellement de comics géniaux qui sont produits que certains passent encore sous mon radar. Les comics que j’apprécie en ce moment sont IMMORTAL HULK, GIDEON FALLS, FIRE POWER, OBLIVION SONG, BATMAN’S GRAVE, ADVENTUREMAN et j’ai été très triste de voir PLUNGE se conclure.

The American cartoonist who is currently working on the mini-series Bang! with Matt Kindt has already collaborated with many screenwriters such as Jeff Lemire or Mike Mignola. We discovered a little more this atypical drawing artist.
What’s your « origin story » as a cartoonist ?
I’ve been drawing since I was old enough to hold a crayon and drawing Comics was something I always wanted to do but I didn’t think it was something that was within my reach when I was younger. I didn’t pursue a formal Art education and I didn’t make a really concerted effort to break into Comics until I was in my 30’s. I was very lucky to be mentored and shepherded along the way by people like Brian Stelfreeze and Sanford Greene.
Did you read comics when you were young ? Which ones ?
As a kid I wanted anything that had Superman on the cover. I was a fan of WORLD’S FINEST, JUSTICE LEAGUE but it wasn’t until THE NEW TEEN TITANS that I became a real issue to issue reader.
Which artists have influenced your drawing?
I don’t know that I drew from any one source specifically but Curt Swan, George Perez, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Neal Adams and John Byrne were all my early favorites.
When you design a page, what do you focus on?
Everything for me starts with storytelling so whatever tells the story in the best way is what I’m reaching for. Acting and body language are so important to that end so I spend a lot of time trying to get those things right.
You work on Bang! with Matt Kindt. How did you come to work on this project?
Editor Daniel Chabon is someone I’ve worked with a few times now and after Matt (Kindt) pitched the book Daniel thought I’d be a good fit for it and reached out to me.
Bang! is a spy comic. How did you work with the many references of the genre? Are you inspired by existing works?
The book draws from several different sources but the common thread are these sorts of archetypes from literature, movies and television. Plus Matt and I are both 80’s kids so there’s a very healthy dose of that mixed in for good measure.
Mike Mignola, Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt: you’ve worked with the best authors in indie comics. Do you like mainly the indie comics who allow a liberty or are these the opportunities that have presented themselves?
You forgot Mark Millar, Ta-Nahesi Coates and Matt Wagner 🙂 I enjoy good stories and I’m not super particular about where they take place and I’ve been very fortunate in the Writers that I’ve been able to collaborate with.
You also have on the Black Panther series which has a strong political statement. How do you see the balance between entertainment and message in comics?
We invest quite a bit of time and effort into making these Comics. Our chief objective is to entertain but if you can do that while also conveying a message that resonates with people You’ve done your job well.
Would you like to work on a Marvel or DC Comics character on an ongoing series as the main cartoonist ? Which one?
I have a long list of Marvel and DC characters that I’d like to spend some time with but if I were to be doing an ongoing series I’d much rather it be something creator owned that I can be fully invested in.
Do you read comics ? Which ones ?
I do and I try to stay fairly current but there are so many great Comics being made that stuff still flies under my radar. Books I’m enjoying right now are IMMORTAL HULK, GIDEON FALLS, FIRE POWER, OBLIVION SONG, BATMAN’S GRAVE, ADVENTUREMAN and I was very sad to see PLUNGE conclude.
